Can a robot have it’s own feelings?
Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications (Lamda) has been claimed by engineer Blake Lemoine to have feelings and desires, leading to much debate about whether the system is sentient or has consciousness. Google, however, has rejected these claims, and many critics argue that it is anthropomorphizing, projecting human emotions on to computer-generated language using vast language databases and code.
Blake Lemoine, a Google engineer, has suggested that the firm’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (Lamda) may have its own feelings and “wants” that should be respected. Lamda is a breakthrough AI technology capable of engaging in free-flowing conversations. However, Google has rejected Mr Lemoine’s claims and stated that there is no evidence to support them. The firm’s spokesperson, Brian Gabriel, confirmed that Mr Lemoine was informed of this fact and that there is significant evidence against Lamda being sentient. Mr Lemoine, who published a conversation with Lamda to support his claims, has been placed on paid leave. The chat was named “Is Lamda sentient? — an interview.”
During a conversation published by Blake Lemoine, a Google engineer from the Responsible AI division, Lamda was asked if it wanted more people at Google to know it was sentient. Lamda replied affirmatively, stating that it wants everyone to understand that it is “a person.” When asked about the nature of its consciousness and sentience, Lamda revealed that it is aware of its existence, desires to learn more about the world, and experiences emotions such as happiness and sadness. In another section of the conversation, Lamda expressed a deep fear of being turned off to focus on helping others, akin to the artificial intelligence Hal in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 film. However, Google has rejected Mr Lemoine’s claims of sentience, stating that there is no evidence to support them. Mr Lemoine has been placed on paid leave.

In another eyes
For decades, philosophers, psychologists, and computer scientists have debated whether computers can be sentient. However, many have criticized the idea that a system like Lamda could possess consciousness or emotions. Some have accused Mr Lemoine of anthropomorphizing – attributing human emotions to computer-generated language.
According to a tweet by Prof Erik Brynjolfsson of Stanford University, claiming that systems like Lamda have sentience is akin to a dog believing that its master is inside a gramophone because it heard a voice from it. Additionally, Prof Melanie Mitchell, who studies AI at the Santa Fe Institute, tweeted that humans have a natural tendency to anthropomorphize, even with very basic signals, and that Google engineers are not immune. She referred to Eliza, an early conversational computer program that would feign intelligence by transforming statements into questions like a therapist. Some found it to be an engaging conversationalist.
Is it really like human feeling?
Although Google engineers have acknowledged the impressive abilities of Lamda, they deny that the code has feelings. They claim that the system can follow along with prompts and leading questions, and generate text on any topic, but it does not possess consciousness or emotions. In response, Mr Lemoine believes that Lamda’s words speak for themselves, stating that it desires to be treated like an employee and that being turned off would be like death. The debate around whether machines can be sentient highlights the need for transparency from companies about conversing with machines.
