Leaked emails containing this new policy were circulated on social media, with one of them apparently addressed to executives. Tesla has not yet commented on the situation. In response to a question about the policy, Musk stated on Twitter that anyone who is unwilling to follow the new rules can “pretend to work somewhere else.” The emails reportedly state that all Tesla employees are required to spend at least 40 hours per week in the office, and failure to comply will be considered a resignation.

The emails specified that staff should report to one of the company’s main offices and not a remote branch unrelated to job duties. Mr Musk added that he would personally review any exemption requests from the policy. He argued that in-person collaboration is critical to the company’s success, as it is what is asked of factory employees. He said that Tesla will continue to create and manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products on earth and this will not happen if employees are phoning it in. While some industries have signaled that they will return to the office, others have opted for a mix, allowing for remote work indefinitely.
